Cortlandt Resident Joaquim Mendes Receives Outstanding Volunteer Award CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. -- The nonprofit group Neighbors Link Northern Westchester recently recognized Cortland Manor resident, Joaquim Mendes, with its Outstanding Volunteer Award. Mendes, a professor who is retired from Westchester Community College, has volunteered for 10 years with Neighbors Link, which gives its recognitions each year in April, National Volunteer Month. Tarrytown Music Hall Celebrates Family Fun Day TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- The Tarrytown Music Hall recently held its fifth semi-annual open house event, Family Fun Day.The event on Sunday, April 24, was a fun-filled day of circus acts, dancing, music and storytelling. It also featured a variety of hands-on arts-and-crafts activities, such as decorating a birdhouse, creating a bird feeder, making spring-themed jewelry, coloring and more. Westchester Circus Arts, Y Dance Academy and FunikiJam World Music all performed at the event.

Katonah Resident Michelle Bieber Receives Volunteer Award KATONAH, N.Y. -- The nonprofit group Neighbors Link Northern Westchester recently recognized Katonah resident, Michelle Bieber, with its Mary Weiss Volunteer Spirit Award.Bieber is one of just two volunteers in the county to receive the award, which is given each year in April, National Volunteer Month. “Michelle’s dedication to Neighbors Link is unmatched,” said Sara Levine, Family Center manager at Neighbors Link Northern Westchester. “Our childcare room runs more smoothly when Michelle is there. Closter Improvement Commission Organizes Second Annual 'Hoe Down' CLOSTER, N.J. -- The Closter Improvement Commission will hold its Second Annual Country Western Hoe Down on Friday, June 10, at Veterans Memorial Park in Closter.Some of the activities will include family square and line dancing, petting zoo, pony rides, pie-eating contests, delicious BBQ, yodeling and face painting. All ages are welcome. Guest are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs and dress to impress in country western. Closter Repaves Several Streets CLOSTER, N.J. -- Closter Road Paving Program has recently commenced on the following Closter Streets: Columbus Avenue, Grove Street, Demarest Avenue (between Knickerbocker Road and Durie Avenue) and Van Sciver Street. Kensico School Gets Active For Heart Health MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. -- The Kensico School gymnasium was transformed into a whirlwind of activity recently for the school's annual Jump Rope for Heart event. The students were divided up into sections and spread out, playing different games. On the stage, girls took turns hula-hooping, while a group of students hopped onto the rock-climbing wall and tried not to fall off. Pair after pair ran through the obstacle course; others played with balls or skipped ropes. Some of the other activities included rope-climbing and paddle ball games. Valhalla Middle School's Partners' Program Takes Outdoor Adventure MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. -- Students and staff members involved in Valhalla Middle School's Partners' Program traveled to Putnam County on Wednesday, April 27, for a spring field trip. The group participated in an outdoor adventure at Green Chimneys in Southeast that concentrated on team-building activities. John Jay High School Students Fare Well In 'Envirothon' Competition LEWISBORO, N.Y. -- Two teams represented John Jay High School at the Hudson Valley Regional Envirothon held at Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill on April 14.Each team was composed of five juniors and seniors in AP environmental science.
