A Newark man who robbed two people at gunpoint before killing one of them on New Year's Eve 2023 has been sentenced to 100 years in prison, authorities said.
Jarell Riles, 35, of Newark, was sentenced after a jury convicted him on Feb. 18, 2026, of first-degree felony murder, first-degree murder, robbery, and weapons offenses in the killing of Jose Gaona, 67, of Newark, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens said.
Superior Court Judge Ronald Wigler, who presided over both the trial and sentencing, imposed the sentence.
